The TAFELMUSIK CHAMBER CHOIR, under the direction of IVARS TAURINS made its second appearance on the CBC Records label with that perennial favourite, and the Choir’s signature work, Handel’s Messiah (SMCD 5193). That performance and recording garnered wonderful reviews, including one from the critic of Opera Canada who wrote, "… the excellent CBC recording catches their brisk, committed vigour to perfection."
In this release, the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir turns that sense of vigour and quest for perfection upon another great baroque master, Johann Sebastian Bach, and his equally great choral collection, the Six Motets : BWV 225 – BWV 230. The choral motet has had a long and varied history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Bach’s six motets represent a small but significant contribution to the genre, a culmination of the work of several generations of German composers before him. The motets vary greatly in size, structure and scope and, in this performance version, the Double-choir is supported by leading Tafelmusik soloists. In all six works, Bach’s absolute mastery of style and technique is coupled with a profound understanding of the sense and purpose of the texts, qualities which are underscored by the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and Orchestra’s probing and profound interpretation.
