"La sagesse jamais n'a rien de trop sévère, Et jamais le plaisir n'a rien de dangereux": ( Wisdom refrains from too much censure, and pleasure leads to no danger )

How well these lines from Louis-Nicolas Clérambault's cantata L'Isle de Délos describe the essence of Arcadia, that idyllic, mythical place where prudence and pleasure are ever at odds, where the gods of ancient Greece converse with the courtiers of the Sun King, and all play at love with an innocent impunity. Arcadia was put on the map by painters, poets and musicians: the popular imagination kept it there. Few genres show this with greater clarity than the French Baroque cantata, one of the most popular forms of the new century, and no cantata composer showed it with more eloquence than Clérambault.

This album explores the serious and lighter side of Clérambault as presented through the early music ensemble LES COUCOUS BÉNÉVOLES and soprano ANN MONOYIOS. The suite and two trios recorded here are representative of his more conservative and perhaps unassuming music while the cantatas take us to a different ground altogether, for it is from these that one can take the true measure of Clérambault's genius. Of the 25 cantatas he composed, it was Orphée in particular that made Clérambault's reputation. Orphée, published in his first book of cantatas in 1710 and performed over and over again in his lifetime, was responsible, probably more than all of the other works put together, for the almost universal esteem in which the composer was held. Scan the entire French cantata repertoire and you will not find a finer work: Orphée is benchmark for the genre. The dramatic nature and emotional extremes of Orphée are contrasted in wonderful fashion with the pastoral serenity of the other cantata represented on this recording, L'Isle de Délos.

Featured in the cantatas is baroque specialist, soprano Ann Monoyios, who has collaborated with many of the most respected performers in the world of early music. She has been celebrated throughout Europe and North America in repertoire that ranges from baroque to contemporary and includes opera, oratorio, chamber music and recitals.

Les Coucous Bénévoles (The Benevolent Cuckoos) takes its name from a harpsichord piece by François Couperin, whose music the group particularly love to play. Members of this early music ensemble, founded in 1988, include Elissa Poole, baroque flute, Colin Tilney, harpsichord, Stephen Marvin, violin, and Sergei Istomin, viola da gamba.
