For years, wind players have delighted audiences with music for winds by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. For years, too, many wind players have known of a set of six works, sometimes attributed to Mozart, sometimes not. Several of these octets first came to light a few months only after Mozart’s death, among a flood of 70 new publications.

All six of the Octets (or Partitas) for winds are included on this first complete, double-CD recording by the FESTIVAL WINDS. Three works (K. Anh.C 17.04, 17.05, and 17.07) are performed from the first ever critical edition of material that can be traced back to the weeks following Mozart's death. Three other works (K. Anh.C 17.01, 17.02 and 17.03) are also a first recording of a new critical edition. The editions were made by David Bourque, clarinetist with the Festival Winds.

Detailed analytical notes by Mozart scholar Daniel N. Leeson provide extensive background information on the works.

The recording also includes a bonus track of Beethoven’s Rondino in E flat, WoO 25. This delightful music all falls in the tradition of late 18th century harmoniemusik for winds. The classic harmonie band of pairs of clarinets, oboes, French horns, and bassoons flourished in Mozart’s last decade and for a decade beyond. It played an important part in the social and musical life of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1782 until the rise of Napoleon.

For over two decades, the Festival Winds have performed harmoniemusik at the annual Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. In keeping with the performance practices of the time, they are joined by double bass player Joel Quarrington. They invite the listener to enjoy this double CD recording - the first recording of the complete wind octets of K. Anhang C.- and decide for themselves whether the music comes from the pen of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
