This CD release launches the world music sub-label which in cooperation with CBC Radio One's GLOBAL VILLAGE will present unique and wonderfully interesting music-making, live on stage, from the studio and from our archives.

To launch this new series, we turn to MAZA MEZÉ (Greek and Arabic words for 'an assortment of appetizers), one of the most original world-music groups playing in Canada today.

This 9 piece Toronto-based ensemble uses explorations into traditional music from Greece and the Middle East as a launching pad for their own unique and original sound. Hypnotika is an offering of luscious songs ranging from the reflective to the ecstatic. Sung in several languages, the band's compositions are as varied as the cultural and musical backgrounds of its members.

This eclectic group includes some of Toronto's finest musical improvisers and innovators: the powerhouse vocals of JAYNE BROWN, JENNIFER MOORE, MARYEM HASSAN TOLLAR and SOPHIA GRIGORIADIS are accompanied by instrumentalists ERNIE TOLLAR, JOHN GZOWSKI and RICK HYSLOP, and percussionists DEBASHIS SINHA and JEFF WILSON.

The CBC Records world music sub-label is associated with GLOBAL VILLAGE, CBC Radio's platform for world music performances and news. GLOBAL VILLAGE is a unique hybrid of radio programme and website produced at CBC, in Toronto, Canada. With a network of some 200 correspondents it has broadcast reports from over 300 places in over 100 countries around the world. It is broadcast weekly across Canada on CBC Radio One, to most of the world by shortwave and satellite on Radio-Canada International, and in streaming RealAudio from the mainpages of both cbc.ca and rcinet.ca.
