Charles Marius Barbeau (1883-1969) was one of Canada's most renowned anthropologists, folklorists, and ethnomusicologists. His interest in recording the stories, languages and songs of Aboriginal people began in British Columbia, later extending to the Huron and Iroquois of Ontario and Québec. It is to his native Québec, and his love of French Canadian folklore that this compact disc on CBC Records turns its attention.
Few commercially recorded reference materials for Québec’s traditional repertoire exist, and so the songs gathered by Barbeau constitute a cultural treasure of great value. It is an almost unbelievable stroke of luck that, in the early years of the 20th-century, he was able to travel over such a wide area and record songs and a style of singing that have, today, practically disappeared.
The objective of this re-recording of the early 20th-century performances is to give current and future traditional singers an opportunity to get to know this type of repertory and, eventually, use it to mould their own artistic style.
The recording features a selection of songs collected by Marius Barbeau that reveal all the depth, variety and unchanging beauty of the traditional repertory. The featured musicians who play this wonderful and unique material include some of Québec’s most dominant figures in traditional music. Influenced at an early age by this music, ÉRIC BEAUDRY is a remarkable singer who also plays a wide range of instruments.
ANDRÉ MARCHAND is one of the founding members of ‘La Bottine Souriante’. In addition to being an outstanding performer of traditional songs, he is a wonderfully inventive guitarist. LISAN HUBERT arrived in the Lanaudière region in Québec and settled in the mountains in 2000. Her adopted region has given her inspiration and great pleasure in exploring new musical horizons.
Since 1980, DANIELLE MARTINEAU has collected repertoire, carried out research and led activities in the field of oral tradition. Her enthusiasm in both song and dance is well recognized. The multi-talented singer and instrumentalist DANIEL ROY is very active and committed to the discovery of music and songs and, of course, the people who convey them. It was the powerful spell of Québec’s traditional music that kept American-born fiddler LISA ORNSTEIN in la belle province for over a dozen years and today communes with dear friends and musical soul-mates as often as she can.
