WINNER OF A 2004 JUNO AWARD FOR BEST TRADITIONAL JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR

GUIDO BASSO is one of Canada's most charismatic and influential jazz musicians. Whether performing as soloist, sidesman or leader, as arranger, composer or conductor, he has been thrilling audiences worldwide for over four decades.

His discography is considerable, but no CD to his credit thus far is quite as unique as this new one on the CBC Records jazz label. Unique in many ways with a backdrop of one of Montreal's most dynamic jazz trios, pianist LORRAINE DESMARAIS, bassist MICHEL DONATO and drummer PAUL BROCHU, plus a string orchestra complement, all directed by another Canadian jazz great, PHIL DWYER.

The pairing of Guido Basso and string orchestra is a natural one given the musical line up that has many old favourites along with some wonderful new material on tap including a brand new composition, Portrait of Guido, penned by Phil Dwyer in honour of his mentor. One of the 'old' favourites is the title track for this new CD, Lost in the Stars, taken from Kurt Weill's last broadway musical play. The arrangement for flugelhorn, jazz trio and strings is immediately appealing with its lush lines and unique interplay.

From Thelonius Monk's Round Midnight and Jimmy McHugh's I Can't Give You Anything But Love to Antonio Carlos-Jobim's Waters of March and Con Conrad's The Continental, and everything in between, this CD will leave you with 'a song in your heart,' and an even greater appreciation for the musical grace and style of one of the world's great brass artists.
