At the time of the broadcast, Martin Luther King Jr. was not only one of the founders and the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he and his father were co-pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and received more than 250 citations for his work in civil rights. He was selected by Time magazine as “Man of the Year” in 1963.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929, he obtained degrees at Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary after which he undertook further studies at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Harvard and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Systematic Theology from Boston University.
