At a Montreal skating rink in 1875, the puck is dropped on a new sort of game. It’s fast and punishing, and on this night hockey is transformed from genteel sport to seething spectacle.
Hockey: A People’s History is CBC’s epic series chronicling the story of a game and the soul of a nation. Born as a game of survival against the snow and ice of a Canadian winter, hockey gave a new country it’s first heroes and champions.
The story of hockey is the struggle of class and gender, as working class men and women fight for their place in a rich man’s game. It’s the dreams of towns and their teams, where rogues and roughnecks do battle with hockey barons and bluebloods.
Hockey is where Canada’s cultures collide and rivalries divide. It’s also a game that unites us like nothing else can. In a tale that spans two centuries, this bold new series Hockey: A People’s History documents the power and passion of a game and the country that gave it life.
The DVD is a 6-pak containing all 10 eps of the series in english and in french, plus more than 200 minutes of bonus content including behind-the-scenes features; historical hockey featurettes, extended interviews with hockey greats Gretzky, Dryden, Bowman, Cherry, Wickenheiser, and with Tom Cochrane; directors' commentaries.
Widescreen presentation and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. French and english eps are close captioned. English eps are also described video.

Hockey: A People's History on DVD, June 29, 2009 Review By:Glenn Robertson Quite simply,if you are a hockey fan and/or grew up in Canada, this is a must have story of OUR game. Everything that is Hockey in Canada is presented here in a very riveting and well produced documentary that defines how hockey helped define who we are as Canadians. Good, Not Great For This American Hockey Fan, January 10, 2008 Review By:Tim Dokken I was very eager to watch this documentary series, as I heard that it was every bit as good as Ken Burns' baseball documentary. Granted that is setting the bar high, but this series comes up a bit short of that because of its narrow (CANADIAN ONLY) view of the game's history, and because of the series seemingly anti-American attitudes in the later episodes. For example, during the original 6 period we get the history of two franchises - Leafs and Canadians. Going through 40 years of the game without learning the history of the Rangers, Bruins, RedWings or Blackhawks franchises was a little disappointing. Even players on American based teams got the short end of the stick. I'd like to know why so little time was spent talking about Bobby Orr, but my only conclusion is that it's because he played for Boston. The later episodes are even worse - America is blamed for God, I mean Gretzky, leaving Edmonton, the demise of the Jets and Nordiques, and Americans are depicted as fools who don't understand the game. And then there's the 2002 olympics...oh my goodness. Talking about Wickenheiser getting revenge (as if the Americans had stolen something that was rightfully hers) or showing the Canadian soldier being airlifted after being injured by an American bomb in Afghanistan, well let's just say the producers went a little over the top...SO IF YOU'RE AN AMERICAN HOCKEY FAN WHO ISN'T AN IDIOT, this is a good series worth having (it's pretty cheaply priced) but you probably will be disappointed by it's myopic view of the game (Ken Burns, by contrast, is painstaking in his attempt to be a non-biased reporter of history) and the anti-American sentiment at the end of the series.
