It's August 1914. Lt Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian travelling with the Canadian Army is travelling by train when he buys a bear cub at a rest stop. He names her Winnie after his home town Winnipeg and takes her with him to the camp in Quebec where the Canadian Expeditionary Force is gathering, and to England as the company's mascot. When Harry's regiment is sent to fight in France, Harry leaves Winnie in the care of the London Zoo where she becomes a symbol of friendship and hope for the children of London living in the shadow of a frightening war.
